Stop Procrastinating!
First of all, let me tell you that everybody has procrastinated, everybody. So don’t feel left out if you do it. The reason why people procrastinate and consistently put things off is because most can’t stand the fact that they have to do something. Whenever you know you have to do something, I guarantee if its something that you do not enjoy doing, you will put it off until a later time. There is a part of us that knows what needs to be done and desires to gets those things done. However, there is also another part of us that likes to be comfortable and have fun. When we procrastinate these two sides are opposing each other, and whichever side is the strongest at the time will win. Or, if both sides are in agreement, then you can get the task done.
There is nothing wrong with the fun comfortable side of us at all, we just have to know exactly how to work with it. The key to accomplishing tasks and getting things done is to do something that benefits both sides. Here is an example : If you know you have to study for a test, but your teacher says you have a month to take it, what do most people do? Most people will wait until the last minute to study for it. There are a only a few who actually begin studying right away. But, for people who are not nerds normally wait until the last week. Why, because that is not in agreement with side number 2, the fun side. The only time we do get something done when side number two doesn’t care for it is when it is an emergency situation that could hurt us. This is when side number one is in full control.
The reason we put things off is because we don’t value them as important at that particular time. The correct thing to do is to take care of everything ahead of time to ensure completion.
Here is the trick. Do you remember when you were a kid, and your parents told you to clean your room. Now picture yourself playing a game or something while they told you this. What did you think, “Oh, Ill clean it later whenever I‘m done playing this gameâ€. That’s probably what you would have said if that were the only thing your parents told you. However, if they came back and said “When you get done, Ill take you to get some ice cream†I can guarantee that you would immediately put that game on pause and get started cleaning your room perfectly. How? Easy. In this particular situation both sides were benefited equally. The task was to clean up your room. Side number one understood this. Side number two didn’t agree. What made side number two agree was when ice cream was mentioned. Once side number two agrees to something it encourages side number one to get whatever it needs to get done quickly. So what you should do is review your task of what must be done. Then you should always remember to reward yourself with something that you can only have or do at the end once the task is completed. This is how you benefit both sides of yourself successfully.
The Process. What should we do first? First we must understand that in order for us to accomplish a task we must benefit both sides. In order to do that we need to decide what needs to be done. After we decide what we need to do the next step is to make sure that we are completely ready to handle the task. You don’t want to be unprepared do you? No, you don’t. The third step is to make moves, in other words take action, NOW. After you take action, the only thing left to do is to make sure that everything is complete, or if its an ongoing task or goal, just make it a habit of keeping up with it.
If you have a large task or goal, do not try to take it all at once. This is where most people fail. Learn to chop your tasks up, and complete them in sections. If you make each of those sections easy, the whole process will seem easy. These steps work all of the time, and every time as long as you are willing to put in the action.
